A Family Safari Itinerary That Actually Works With Kids

The biggest mistake families make planning a first safari is copying an adult-oriented itinerary wholesale — long game drives, remote conservancies, minimal downtime. Kids, particularly under ten, do best with shorter activity blocks and more predictable payoff.

Lake Nakuru is one of our most recommended family destinations for exactly this reason: rhino sightings are close to guaranteed, drive times within the park are short, and a boat cruise on nearby Lake Naivasha adds variety without a long transfer.

Look for lodges with family or connecting rooms, a pool, and ideally a kids' activity programme — many properties now offer junior ranger badges, tracking lessons, or storytelling around the campfire, which keeps children engaged during the midday rest period.

Build in slack. A family itinerary with back-to-back activities every day will exhaust younger travellers faster than adults. We typically recommend one clearly 'lighter' day for every two active ones.

Finally, brief children (and yourself) on safari etiquette beforehand — staying seated during game drives, speaking quietly near wildlife — and most guides are excellent at framing sightings in a way that keeps kids genuinely fascinated rather than just watching.
